Latvian champions Riga FC have discovered their opponents for the UEFA Conference League play-off round after Faroese champions KI Klaksvik were eliminated from the UEFA Europa League third qualifying round by Polish champions Lech Poznan.
The identity of Riga FC’s play-off opponents was confirmed on Friday after Lech Poznan cruised to a 5-0 away victory over KI Klaksvik in the second leg of their UEFA Europa League third qualifying round tie, completing a dominant 6-0 aggregate triumph.
The match had originally been scheduled for Thursday but was postponed by 24 hours after the Polish champions encountered significant travel disruption. Lech’s initial flight to the Faroe Islands on Wednesday was cancelled due to adverse weather, while a second attempt on Thursday also ran into problems, forcing the team to land in Bergen. They were only cleared to continue their journey around six hours before the scheduled kick-off, leading UEFA to postpone the match until Friday.
Once the match finally got underway, Lech left little doubt over the outcome. The Polish champions took the lead before half-time before scoring four more goals after the break to secure a comfortable victory and book their place in the UEFA Europa League play-off round.
As the defeated side, KI Klaksvik drop into the UEFA Conference League play-off round, where they will take on Riga FC.
The first leg will be played in the Faroe Islands next Thursday, with the return leg taking place a week later at Skonto Stadium in Rīga. Victory over KI Klaksvik would send Riga FC into the league phase of a UEFA competition for the first time in the club’s history.
