Riga FC will play in the main stage of a UEFA competition for the first time in club history after surviving a dramatic night at Skonto Stadium, beating KI Klaksvik 2-1 and winning the tie 3-2 on aggregate.
Head coach Adrian Gul’a made no changes to the starting line-up from last week’s first leg in the Faroe Islands, and Riga began the match on the front foot. Their first good chance came in the fourth minute when Andres Salazar found space for a shot on his weaker right foot, but his effort went just over the crossbar.
The opening 15 minutes belonged almost entirely to Riga, but the Latvian champions lacked the finishing touch. KI goalkeeper Mark Jensen was also up to the task, producing saves to deny Raki Aouani, Baba Musah and Iago Siqueira as the hosts repeatedly pushed for an early breakthrough.
After a dominant opening half-hour in which Riga created several promising opportunities, the tempo dropped slightly. The home side continued to control possession, but clear chances became harder to find. Klaksvik, having survived the early pressure, began looking for moments of their own on the counter-attack and through set-pieces, with Arni Frederiksberg remaining their biggest threat from wide free-kick deliveries.
Riga had been the better side throughout the first half and could feel unfortunate to go into the break level, but the long-awaited goal finally arrived early in the second half. After a cross into the penalty area was not properly cleared, the ball dropped to Reginaldo Ramires, who controlled it, took a touch and fired home to give Riga the lead both on the night and on aggregate.
The goal brought another spell of pressure from Riga, but Klaksvik survived and then stunned Skonto Stadium in the 67th minute. With their first real chance of the match, the Faroese champions equalised. A cross was allowed to come in too easily from the left, Frederiksberg left the ball for captain Pall Klettskard, and the experienced forward made no mistake with KI’s first shot on target.
The equaliser changed the feeling of the match completely. Klaksvik grew in confidence, while Riga suddenly looked nervous and began making avoidable mistakes. Those nerves spilled over in the 75th minute when Salazar reacted after a foul and put his hands towards the throat of a Klaksvík player. The referee immediately showed him a straight red card, leaving Riga to play the final 15 minutes of regular time with ten men.
Klaksvík then began to control more of the ball, forcing Riga to defend deep and stay alert inside their own penalty area. With extra time approaching, Riga were handed a huge gift in the 88th minute. A poor pass from a Klaksvik defender was intercepted on the edge of the box by substitute Salah Oulad M’Hand, who took a few touches, moved into the area and calmly finished to put Riga back in front.
The Faroese side still had one more major chance to force extra time, but a header from a set-piece flashed narrowly wide. Five minutes of stoppage time followed, bringing more tension inside Skonto Stadium, but Riga held on.
The final whistle confirmed a historic achievement: Riga FC are through to the UEFA Conference League main stage for the first time in the club’s history.
