Tonybet Virslīga leaders RFS produced a dominant display on Monday evening, defeating league newcomers Ogre United 6-0 at LNK Sporta Parks to reclaim first place in the standings from city rivals Riga FC.

Despite having been pushed hard in both previous meetings this season, RFS left no room for surprises this time around. Viktors Morozs’ side controlled proceedings from the opening whistle and needed only nine minutes to break the deadlock. Dmitrijs Zelenkovs delivered a dangerous ball into the area which found Mārtiņš Ķigurs, and the midfielder calmly finished from close range to make it 1-0.

The pressure continued to build and midway through the first half RFS doubled their advantage. Strahinja Rakic was brought down inside the penalty area by Mārtiņš Lormanis, with defender Aleksandar Filipovic stepping up to convert the resulting spot kick and put the home side firmly in control.

Ogre United’s evening became even more difficult after an early injury forced Markuss Ivulāns who was stretched off the field after a collision with Rakic. While the visitors occasionally threatened on the counterattack, including a Johnson Kabagambe effort brilliantly tipped over by Jevgēņijs Nerugals, RFS remained in complete command.

The third goal arrived in the 32nd minute when Mārtiņš Ķigurs turned provider, delivering a low cross for Darko Lemajic who finished clinically from inside the box. The Serbian striker nearly added another before the interval, but Jānis Biščuhis made several important saves to keep the scoreline respectable.

Any hopes Ogre had of mounting a comeback disappeared shortly after the restart. Roberts Savaļnieks, introduced at half-time, immediately made an impact and delivered an excellent cross in the 54th minute which Lemajic powered home with a header for his second goal of the evening and 4-0 to RFS.

With the result already decided, Morozs rotated his squad and gave minutes to several players from the bench. One of them, Ismael Diomande, made the most of his opportunity. The Ivorian midfielder first headed home from a Mor Talla delivery in the 89th minute before adding another deep into stoppage time after following up a saved effort from Strahinja Rakic to complete the rout.

Ogre United rarely threatened throughout the second half, with Vadym Mashchenko’s long-range effort and a handful of blocked attempts representing their best attacking moments. At the other end, Biščuhis prevented the defeat from becoming even heavier with several impressive saves.

The 6-0 victory lifts RFS back to the top of the Tonybet Virslīga table with 46 points from 19 matches, moving one point clear of Riga FC. Ogre United remain rooted to the bottom of the standings and continue to trail the relegation play-off position by nine points.

RFS return to action on Thursday with a away trip to Liepāja, while Ogre United will host direct relegation rivals Tukums 2000 in another crucial battle at the foot of the table.
