Tonybet Virslīga Matchday 14 saw league leaders RFS comfortably defeat FS Jelgava 4-0 at home, as Aleksandrs Basovs’ side could not repeat their previous round heroics against Riga FC, this time falling heavily against the other Rīga powerhouse.
RFS entered the match without one of their key players for the first time this season. Latvian international Jānis Ikaunieks, who had contributed five goals and three assists this campaign, was absent from the squad for unknown reasons. However, Georgian winger Lasha Odisharia made his first start since the opening meeting between the two clubs on April 8, continuing his return from injury.
The hosts controlled possession from the opening minutes and repeatedly looked dangerous through crosses from Roberts Savaļnieks and Odisharia. Darko Lemajic already threatened several times early on with headers before eventually breaking the deadlock in the 27th minute. Savaļnieks delivered another accurate cross from the right flank and the Serbian striker powered his header into the roof of the net for 1-0.
Despite RFS dominance, Jelgava had several dangerous moments before halftime. Filip Hasek, Leos Prior and Jegors Novikovs all forced Jevgēnijs Nerugals into saves, with the RFS goalkeeper keeping his side’s advantage intact.
The second half began perfectly for the home side. Just two minutes after the restart, Odisharia delivered another dangerous ball into the area and Lemajic once again rose highest, directing his header into the top corner to double the advantage and score his second goal of the evening.
Jelgava struggled to recover after the quick second goal and RFS continued to create chances almost at will. In the 57th minute the defending champions effectively ended the contest from a corner kick. Haruna Njie flicked the ball across goal and Albanian defender Herdi Prenga finished from close range for 3-0.
Morozs then introduced fresh attacking options from the bench, including Mor Talla and Martins Ķigurs, with both immediately adding more energy to the attack. Fifteen minutes from time, substitute Talla produced last goal of the night. After receiving the ball on the right side of the box, the Senegalese attacker cut inside and curled a precise left-footed strike into the far top corner to complete the 4-0 victory.
RFS secured their 12th victory in 14 league matches and restored their four-point advantage over nearest challengers Riga FC at the top of the Virslīga table. FS Jelgava meanwhile remain eighth with 13 points.
FC RFS vs FS Jelgava – 4-0 (1-0)
