Werder Bremen are set to make Karl Hein’s move from Arsenal permanent after triggering a €3m purchase option in the goalkeeper’s loan deal, according to reports in Germany.

Sky Sport journalist Florian Plettenberg said Werder have activated the clause to secure the 24-year-old Estonia international’s registration from Arsenal. Hein is expected to compete for the number one spot in Bremen.

Transfer specialist Dominik Schneider of Fussballtransfers has reported that Hein will sign a four-year contract, running until July 2030. Neither club has announced the deal.

Plettenberg also reported that current Werder first-choice Mio Backhaus has an agreement in place with Freiburg, with talks between the clubs ongoing. Werder are said to be aiming for a fee in the region of €15m to €20m.

Hein spent the season on loan at Werder but made only two appearances, stepping in during Backhaus’ absence for a 4-0 defeat by Bayern Munich and a 1-0 win over St. Pauli.

Werder finished 15th in the Bundesliga with 32 points from 34 matches. Hein has been sidelined since March after suffering a thumb injury in training.
