A new attendance record for the Lithuanian top flight in the 21st century was set on Sunday as 8,308 spectators packed into Darius and Girėnas Stadium to witness Vilnius Žalgiris gain revenge on their rivals. A second-half goal from Nikola Petkovic secured a 1-0 victory over defending champions Kauno Žalgiris in the latest edition of the Žalgiris derby.
The defeat extended Kauno Žalgiris’ winless run in TOPLYGA to six matches and completed a disappointing month of May for a team that only a few weeks ago looked untouchable at the top of the table.
Both sides entered the derby under pressure. Kauno Žalgiris had already lost first place on Saturday after Džiugas Telšiai defeated Panevežys and arrived looking to end a five-match winless streak in league play that stretched back to the beginning of May. Meanwhile, Vilnius Žalgiris came into the match having lost their previous two games and without a victory in their last three league outings.
The opening half was almost the complete opposite of the first derby between the clubs earlier this season. Back in April, Vilnius Žalgiris created numerous opportunities before eventually suffering a heavy 0-3 defeat. This time it was Kauno Žalgiris who generated the better chances but failed to convert.
Motiejus Burba twice came close to opening the scoring, while former Vilnius player Fabien Ourega rattled the crossbar. The champions’ best chance fell to Aldayr Hernandez, who met a cross from the right flank from close range, only to be denied by an outstanding save from Vincentas Šarkauskas.
The goalkeeper was making his first league start since April 10 after head coach Andrius Skerla opted to restore him to the lineup ahead of Carlos Olses, who had started the previous seven matches.
After surviving the early pressure, Vilnius gradually grew into the contest. Nikola Petkovic became increasingly influential in attack, while Deividas Šešplaukis forced Tomas Švedkauskas into an excellent save with a powerful effort aimed at the near top corner.
The decisive moment arrived in the 59th minute. Klaudijus Upstas delivered a precise cross from the right flank and found Petkovic inside the penalty area, who headed home from close range for his fourth league goal of the season to put the visitors ahead.
Driven forward by a record crowd, Kauno Žalgiris pushed for an equaliser and won several dangerous set pieces, but struggled to create clear-cut opportunities. Head coach Eivinas Černiauskas attempted to change the momentum by introducing Dāvis Ikaunieks, whose appearance had also brought energy in last week’s defeat against Sūduva.
Despite the pressure, Vilnius defended superbly during the closing stages. The visitors dealt confidently with crosses into the box and limited the champions mostly to speculative efforts from distance.
The drama was not over, however. Deep into stoppage time Vilnius broke away on a counterattack and again found themselves with an opportunity to kill the match. Matas Vareika was unable to take advantage, giving Kauno one final opportunity to launch an attack of their own. After a late cross into the area, a Kauno Žalgiris player went down inside the box and VAR was called into action, briefly silencing the travelling supporters.
After a review, no infringement was found and Vilnius Žalgiris were finally able to celebrate an important derby victory.
The result leaves Kauno Žalgiris heading into the international break in unfamiliar territory. Excluding their cup victory over Riteriai, the champions finished May without a single league win, collecting four draws and one defeat. A side that many observers were already discussing as likely champions by April now finds itself second in the standings, one point behind surprise leaders Džiugas Telšiai and only one point ahead of another surprise package, TransINVEST.
For Vilnius Žalgiris, the victory lifts them into sixth place and keeps them firmly in the race in what has become an incredibly congested Toplyga table. After 16 rounds, only nine points separate leaders Džiugas from seventh-placed Panevežys, setting up a fascinating second half of the season.
