Lithuanian international Pijus Širvys is close to joining Slovenian side NK Celje after announcing his departure from Maribor at the end of May, according to sources cited by Lithuanian media outlet 11×11.
Širvys officially confirmed his exit from Maribor on May 25, bringing an end to a successful two-and-a-half-year spell with the club. The 28-year-old right-back joined Maribor from FK Panevėžys in 2023, making his first move abroad.
Although earlier reports linked Širvys with a move to Azerbaijani champions Qarabağ, NK Celje has now emerged as the most likely destination.
If the transfer is completed, Širvys will join two of his Lithuanian national team teammates at Celje: striker Armandas Kučys and centre-back Artemijus Tutyškinas.
Celje won the Slovenian league title this season and will compete in the UEFA Champions League qualifying rounds in the upcoming campaign, offering Širvys an opportunity to play in European competition.
