Estonia began their 2026/27 UEFA Nations League campaign with a valuable point on the road, fighting back from a goal down to earn a 1-1 draw against Iceland in Reykjavik thanks to a second-half header from Maksim Paskotši.
Head coach Jürgen Henn made several interesting selections for the opening match of the campaign. Karel Mustmaa was given the responsibility of leading the attack, while Mihkel Ainsalu was deployed in an unfamiliar advanced role. Rasmus Peetson started on the right side, with Patrik Kristal beginning the evening on the bench.
Iceland controlled much of the opening period, but Estonia’s compact defensive shape initially prevented the hosts from creating many clear opportunities. Paskotši produced an important intervention after 15 minutes to cut out a dangerous cross, while Karol Mets was also required to make several defensive clearances.
Estonia’s best opportunity of the first half arrived in the 38th minute. Ainsalu found Kevor Palumets with an excellent pass, leaving the midfielder with a clear shooting opportunity from close range, but Iceland goalkeeper Hakon Valdimarsson produced a crucial save.
That miss proved costly just before the interval. In the 45th minute, Hakon Arnar Haraldsson delivered from the right and Andri Gudjohnsen directed his header beyond Karl Jakob Hein and into the corner to give Iceland a 1-0 half-time lead.
Estonia responded impressively after the break and created another excellent opportunity in the 50th minute. Mattias Käit released Peetson down the right, whose low delivery found Ainsalu around ten metres from goal, but Valdimarsson again denied the visitors.
Two minutes later Estonia were handed an even better opportunity when Peetson was fouled inside the penalty area. Palumets stepped up to take the resulting penalty and sent his effort towards the bottom-left corner, but Valdimarsson guessed correctly and produced another important save.
Despite the missed penalty, Estonia continued searching for an equaliser. Henn introduced Kristal for Ainsalu in the 61st minute, and three minutes later the visitors finally found their reward. Peetson delivered an excellent cross from the left and Maksim Paskotši rose to direct a header into the bottom corner, making it 1-1.
Iceland increased the pressure during the closing stages as Estonia were forced deeper towards their own penalty area. Hein became increasingly important, making several saves to preserve the draw, while Markus Poom also produced a crucial defensive intervention in the 70th minute.
With Estonia short of attacking options, experienced centre-back Joonas Tamm was introduced for Mustmaa in the 79th minute and deployed as a makeshift striker. Iceland continued to push for a winner, but Hein and the Estonian defence held firm through four minutes of stoppage time.
The 1-1 draw gives Estonia a valuable away point to begin their Nations League campaign, despite the disappointment of Palumets’ missed penalty and several other opportunities to score. Henn’s side will now turn their attention to their next match against Bulgaria.
