Defending Estonian champions Tallinna Flora earned revenge for a series of recent defeats against rivals Nõmme Kalju, securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory away at Hiiu Stadium in the standout fixture of Premium Liiga round 11.
Coming into the match, Kalju had defeated Flora in their previous three meetings, including this year’s Estonian Super Cup final, and bookmakers had installed the home side as favourites. But on Sunday it was Flora who controlled large stretches of the encounter and deservedly walked away with all three points.
The opening half was dominated territorially by Flora, who enjoyed 62 percent possession and forced Kalju deep inside their own half. Set pieces became a constant source of pressure, with the visitors winning nine first-half corners, though Kalju initially managed to defend them well.
Flora’s best chance before the break came in the 41st minute when youngster Sander Alamaa burst forward on a counterattack and rattled the crossbar from 14 metres out after a dangerous Kalju turnover.
Kalju offered very little offensively during the opening 45 minutes, creating only two shots in total as Flora’s organised midfield controlled the tempo of the game.
The breakthrough finally arrived early in the second half. In the 52nd minute, Sander Tovstik stepped forward from left-back and unleashed a powerful strike from around 20 metres that flew into the corner of the net to give Flora a deserved lead.
After going behind, Kalju reacted with a much more aggressive approach. Nikita Andrejev’s side pushed numbers forward and finally started creating chances, forcing Flora goalkeeper Kaur Kivila into two outstanding saves within the space of a minute.
First, Kivila reacted brilliantly to deny Mattias Männilaan close-range header before producing another quick stop moments later to keep out Ibrahim Jabir.
Kalju increased the pressure late on and repeatedly appealed for penalties in the closing stages, particularly after Männilaan went down inside the box under pressure from Vladislav Kreida. VAR reviewed the incident but did not overturn the referee’s original decision.
Despite seven minutes of added time, Flora comfortably managed the final stages of the match, with substitute Danil Kuraksin even coming close to sealing the result on the counterattack before being denied by Henri Perk.
The victory keeps Flora firmly in the title race and cuts the gap to second-placed Kalju down to just one point in the Premium Liiga standings.
