Nõmme Kalju face a near-impossible task to continue their UEFA Conference League campaign after suffering a heavy 2-5 defeat away to Irish side Shelbourne in the first leg of their second qualifying round tie.
The Estonian club endured a disastrous start in Dublin, conceding three goals inside the opening 25 minutes. Although Enrique Esono scored twice to preserve a faint hope ahead of the return leg, Shelbourne remained the stronger side throughout and created enough chances to make the final margin even greater.
The hosts took the lead after only three minutes following a costly mistake in Kalju’s build-up. Henri Perk’s pass failed to reach Modou Tambedou, allowing Sean Moore to win possession and deliver the ball across goal for Rodrigo Freitas to finish from close range.
Kalju struggled to settle and were repeatedly punished whenever they lost possession. Perk prevented further damage with a brave save after Freitas was sent through, but Shelbourne doubled their advantage in the 21st minute. Another rapid attack ended with Moore receiving the ball unmarked around 12 metres from goal and drilling his finish inside the post.
Four minutes later, the Irish side made it 3-0. Bogdan Vaštšuk slipped in possession and the hosts quickly moved the ball forward, allowing Coote to fire through the gap between Maksim Podholjuzin and Tambedou.
Kalju head coach Nikita Andrejev reacted by replacing Podholjuzin with Tiago Baptista after only half an hour. The change helped the visitors become more adventurous, and Baptista soon forced the Shelbourne goalkeeper into a save with a powerful effort.
Esono reduced the deficit in the 40th minute. Oleksandr Musolitin’s diagonal pass released the forward down the left, and after the goalkeeper misjudged his decision to leave the penalty area, Esono produced an excellent lob to make it 1-3.
Kalju were fortunate not to concede again before the interval. Shelbourne struck the post, while Perk produced two excellent saves from consecutive headers following a corner before receiving treatment after a collision.
Any hopes of a second-half comeback were damaged almost immediately after the restart. Daniel Kelly crossed from the left and Moore climbed above Aleksandr Nikolajev at the edge of the six-yard box to head Shelbourne’s fourth goal.
The home side continued to dictate the tempo and remained dangerous from both counter-attacks and set-pieces. Kalju were allowed more possession, but struggled to play through midfield and rarely threatened unless they looked for direct passes towards their forwards.
Shelbourne had several opportunities to add a fifth, with Perk and the Kalju defenders producing important blocks. The goal eventually arrived in the 89th minute after a Kalju corner broke down. Shelbourne launched a quick counter-attack and substitute Daniel Ring drove into the penalty area before firing beyond Perk to make it 5-1.
Kalju responded almost immediately. Rommi Siht played an excellent low pass between the defenders, Esono timed his run to remain onside and finished via the goalkeeper to score his second of the evening.
The teams will meet again in Estonia next week, with Kalju needing a remarkable comeback to overturn a three-goal deficit and keep their European season alive.
