The TOPLYGA title race took another dramatic turn after the conclusion of Round 19, with a new team climbing to the top of the standings as several clubs continued to shape the championship battle.
Banga Extends Historic Winning Streak
Gargždai’s Banga made club history by defeating Hegelmann for the third consecutive time, securing a convincing 2-0 victory.
The hosts produced two contrasting halves. The match shifted decisively after the break when Vaidas Magdušauskas entered the game, providing fresh energy with several dangerous runs and two assists that proved instrumental in Banga’s victory.
The win was Banga’s third in a row and moved the club within just two points of the league leaders.
Hegelmann’s Defensive Issues Continue
Although Hegelmann have only suffered one heavy defeat this season, a loss to FK Kauno Žalgiris, and conceded three goals only once more against Džiugas, defensive consistency has become an increasing concern.
The Kaunas District side last kept a clean sheet in Round 6 against Žalgiris. Since then, they have conceded at least one goal in 12 consecutive league matches.
FK Žalgiris Unable to Break Through
FK Žalgiris Vilnius controlled much of their match against Džiugas but were unable to find a breakthrough as the teams settled for a goalless draw.
The result leaves Žalgiris sixth in the standings with 25 points, maintaining a seven-point cushion over the teams immediately below them.
Head coach Andrius Skerla handed new signing Danny Koy Lupano his first start, with the newcomer playing the full 90 minutes. Meanwhile, regular starter Grigore Turda remained on the bench throughout the match.
Džiugas Parts Ways with Two Players
Argentine midfielder Gaston Romano made his final appearance for Džiugas before completing a move to Maltese champions Floriana after receiving a more lucrative offer.
The Telšiai club also bid farewell to 19-year-old Ukrainian Artem Marchiuk, who has already made his debut for Latvian side Ogre United. He joins former Riteriai midfielder Leif Estevez, who had previously moved to the club.
TransINVEST Keeps Up the Pressure
Despite missing several suspended players, TransINVEST came from behind to defeat FA Šiauliai 3-1 away from home.
Based on points dropped, Marius Stankevičius’ side currently boasts the league’s strongest record.
While the team’s leading scorers have slowed in recent weeks, Hideyasu Tanaka has stepped into the spotlight. The 22-year-old Japanese midfielder has scored four goals, provided an assist, and won a penalty over his last four appearances.
Ikaunieks Returns to Šiauliai
FA Šiauliai have strengthened their squad ahead of the second half of the season by signing Artiom Baftalovskyi, Arvydas Novikovas, and striker Davis Ikaunieks, who returns from FK Kauno Žalgiris. The trio replaces departing players Rui Batalha and Chidera Henry Nwoga.
Ikaunieks enjoyed an outstanding campaign with Šiauliai in 2024, scoring 18 league goals to finish as the second-highest scorer in the competition.
The Latvian has already made his second debut for the club, although Šiauliai suffered their fourth consecutive defeat.
Sūduva Climbs to the Summit
Marijampolė’s Sūduva claimed another dramatic victory, defeating Panevėžys 2-1 with the decisive goal coming in the final attack of the match.
The victory lifted Donatas Vencevičius’ side to the top of the TOPLYGA standings on 29 points. Although Džiugas have the same number of points, Sūduva leads thanks to a superior head-to-head record.
The visitors overturned a first-half deficit despite being forced into a halftime substitution after captain Aleksandar Živanović was unable to continue. His replacement, Markas Beneta, returned to TOPLYGA action after nearly two months on the sidelines.
FK Panevėžys Searching for Answers
The defeat marked Panevėžys’ tenth loss of the season, the highest total in the league.
Only FA Šiauliai have conceded more goals, while Panevėžys remain the lowest-scoring team in the competition.
The club hopes recent arrival Valdas Paulauskas, alongside earlier signing Nauris Petkevičius, can provide a spark in attack. However, the biggest problems remain at the back, where central defenders Rayen Mzoughi and Milan Delević are unavailable, along with full-backs Laurit Krasniqi and Rokas Rasimavičius, all of whom played key roles during last season’s campaign.
