Estonia centre-back Märten Kuusk is set to return to Poland’s second tier after agreeing a move from GKS Katowice to Polonia Warszawa.

Kuusk helped Katowice qualify for the UEFA Conference League last season but has fallen out of the starting line-up since the spring, following defensive reinforcements brought in during the winter window.

The 30-year-old signed an extension last year to keep him at Katowice through the coming season, yet his minutes dried up late in the campaign. He last completed a full match in the Ekstraklasa in March and made only a one-minute appearance thereafter.

Kuusk joined Katowice in January 2024 and was part of the squad that surged towards promotion to the top flight. He went on to play 42 league matches across two seasons in the Ekstraklasa, scoring once.

Polonia, Warsaw’s oldest sports club, have been rebuilding in recent years after a long spell away from the top division. The former Polish champions, crowned in 1946 and 2000, last played in the Ekstraklasa in 2013 when their top-flight licence was revoked amid debts.

Polonia have now spent three consecutive seasons in the I liga and finished sixth in the most recent campaign for the second year running.
