Super Nova moved up to sixth in the Tonybet Virslīga after beating Grobiņa 2-0 for the third time this season, with Valerijs Lizunovs scoring late and laying on the opener.

The hosts started well and came close early on when centre-back Mārcis Ošs struck the crossbar from inside the penalty area after a deflection. Lizunovs then had an effort blocked from close range, before Grobiņa began to threaten before the break through set-pieces and a near chance for Maksims Sidorovs.

Grobiņa carried that momentum into the second half and created the best opening of the match when Belgian forward Milan Corryn went through one-on-one, only for Dāvis Veisbuks to keep Super Nova level.

Super Nova then struck on the counter-attack in the 59th minute. Lizunovs picked out Bamba with a long pass and the forward finished from around 20 metres out. VAR checked the build-up for a possible handball but the goal stood.

Grobiņa pushed hard late on, with Veisbuks saving Ali Aruna’s long-range attempt in the 87th minute. In added time, Corryn headed wide from Artūrs Zjuzins’ corner after the former Latvia midfielder came on to make his debut.

Super Nova made the points safe at the other end moments later as Lizunovs took Kristers Skadmanis’ pass, rounded the goalkeeper and finished into an empty net from an angle.

The match also saw Latvia U-21 captain Ivans Patrikejevs return for Super Nova.
