Another promising Lithuanian talent has secured a move abroad, with 16-year-old forward Gvidas Valatkevičius signing for Portuguese Primeira Liga side Rio Ave, where he will continue his development after leaving Lithuanian academy VFM Fortūna.
The transfer was announced by the player’s agent, Paulius Paknys, with Valatkevičius becoming the latest young Lithuanian footballer to earn an opportunity in Portugal.
Valatkevičius developed at VFM Fortūna and has regularly represented Lithuania at youth international level. During this summer’s Baltic Cup at U17 level, he found the net against Latvia, while he was also named the Best Forward in Lithuania’s U15 Elite League.
He now joins Rio Ave, a club competing in Portugal’s top flight and owned by Greek businessman Evangelos Marinakis.
Valatkevičius will also become the third Lithuanian currently playing football in Portugal, joining former Kauno Žalgiris players Romualdas Jansonas and Eduardas Jurjonas, who are both continuing their careers in the country.
