Liepāja moved five points clear of Super Nova in the battle for fourth place in the Tonybet Virslīga with a 2-1 home win, in a match that featured two key VAR interventions and a managerial debut.
SK Super Nova struck first with their first clear chance of the game on 28th minute as Valerijs Lizunovs broke quickly on the counter, took the ball past Dutch centre-back Bart Straalman and finished for his fifth league goal of the season.
Liepāja equalised from the spot after VAR review, referee Aleksejs Griščenko calling a handball against Ralfs Šitjakovs. Djibril Gueye converted the penalty 37 minutes in, also moving to five league goals this season.
Soon after, Lizunovs had a fine chance to restore Super Nova’s lead from Rikuto Iida’s cross, but goalkeeper Dāvis Ošs produced a sharp reaction save on the goal line. The decisive moment arrived in first-half stoppage time, when Danila Patijčuks finished from close range. The goal was initially disallowed for offside, but a prolonged VAR check overturned the on-field decision and Liepāja went 2-1 up.
Super Nova applied some early pressure after the break but were largely limited to efforts from distance and could not find an equaliser.
Liepāja forward Ingars Pūlis returned after a month out, coming on late in the match, while both brothers Ošs got booked – Super Nova defender Mārcis in the 88th minute and Liepāja goalkeeper Dāvis in the 93rd.
The game also marked the first match in charge for Liepāja’s new head coach, Estonian ex-Paide manager Vladimir Vassiljev.
