According to the Latvian Football Federation’s player registration database, FK Liepāja have brought experienced Argentine midfielder Leonel Strumia back to Latvia. The 33-year-old returns for a third spell with the club after previously spending eight seasons in Latvian football, six of them in Liepāja.
Since leaving the Virslīga, Strumia has played for Kazakhstan’s Aktobe, Cypriot side AEL Limassol and Montenegrin champions Budućnost Podgorica. Earlier this year he joined Kazakh Premier League club Kaspiy Aktau, where he made 13 league appearances before returning to Latvia.
Strumia first arrived in Latvia in 2015 after joining FK Liepāja from Argentine club Club Atlético Alumni. During his initial five-year spell with the club he helped Liepāja win the 2015 Virslīga title – still the club’s most recent league championship – as well as the 2017 Latvian Cup.
In 2020, the Argentine moved to RFS, where he spent two seasons, adding another Virslīga title and a Latvian Cup triumph to his honours list. He then returned to Liepāja for the 2022 season before continuing his career abroad. Now, he is back at the club for a third time.
Across his career in Latvia, Strumia has made 190 Virslīga appearances, scoring four goals and providing 13 assists.
FK Liepāja currently sit fourth in the Virslīga standings and will host Ogre United in th evening today.
