Latvia’s proposed national football stadium could cost about €86m, according to preliminary estimates. The Latvian Football Federation (LFF) has around €11m available for the project, leaving approximately €75m to be raised.
Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs discussed the plans with FIFA president Gianni Infantino and LFF president Vadims Ļašenko on Monday, 28 September, following an invitation from the federation. Kulbergs said the stadium would provide modern football facilities and could help Latvia host FIFA U20 World Cup matches, while also benefiting the economy. He added that public funding alone would not cover the shortfall and said a private partner would be needed, with public-private cooperation key to delivering the project in time.
The meeting also covered football’s development and its ability to bring people together. Ļašenko highlighted the potential of women’s football in Latvia, while Infantino spoke of the sport’s power to unite nations. Kulbergs said Russia’s return to international football was unacceptable while its full-scale war against Ukraine continues; the meeting also addressed the normalisation of Russia’s and Belarus’s participation in international competitions.
