Kožuhhovski: Estonia’s progress under Henn is no anomaly
Former Estonia Under-21 head coach Roman Kožuhhovski says the senior side’s recent results reflect sustained progress under Jürgen Henn, rather than a brief run of good form.
Henn’s 26 matches in charge over two and a half years have given the squad time to absorb his methods, Kožuhhovski argues. Early results, including victory in the Baltic Cup, helped build confidence, while the team’s current six-match unbeaten run – across the Nations League and Baltic Cup – shows growing consistency.
Kožuhhovski highlighted the side’s tactical flexibility, particularly its use of a back three. Estonia can attack in a 3-4-3 or 3-4-2-1 shape before dropping into a compact five-man defence. He also praised the team’s ability to vary its pressing, keep its shape and defend set-pieces with greater organisation.
He singled out defender Maksim Paskotši for his composure and Patrik Kristal for bringing creativity and unpredictability to the attack. Kožuhhovski said a new generation of players was beginning to take responsibility and lead the team.
The recent international window, which included four matches in a demanding schedule, tested Henn and his staff, Kožuhhovski said. He also pointed to stronger competition for places, with selection based on current performance rather than reputation. Estonia’s display against Iceland, despite several key absences, showed the coach’s trust in the players available to him.
Kožuhhovski said that tactical adaptability, emerging leaders and a settled team culture had helped Estonia move beyond a survival-minded approach and develop greater confidence in possession.
