Lithuanian champions FK Kauno Žalgiris remain stuck in a deep Toplyga crisis after suffering a 0-1 home defeat to Banga Gargždai, extending their winless run to nine matches.

The champions started the match with clear urgency as they looked to end their poor run. Kauno Žalgiris had an early opportunity through Tautvydas Budzilauskas, who found himself in a promising position but failed to make clean contact with the ball and sent his effort well over the crossbar.

However, the positive start was quickly undone in the 17th minute. Georgian defender Anton Tolordava made a late sliding challenge on Aaron Olugbogi, catching the Banga player above the ankle. The referee showed a straight red card, leaving Kauno Žalgiris with ten men and forcing head coach Eivinas Černiauskas into an immediate tactical change, with striker Dāvis Ikaunieks replaced by centre-back Aldayr Hernández.

Banga took advantage of the extra man by taking control of possession and pushing the hosts deeper. The visitors created a number of dangerous attacks, but Kauno Žalgiris defended with commitment and blocked several attempts before they could seriously trouble the goalkeeper.

Despite playing with one man fewer, the home side still threatened through set-pieces, but neither team was able to find a breakthrough before half-time.

Banga continued to press after the restart and eventually made their numerical advantage count in the 57th minute. Carlos Pires delivered a pass into the goalmouth, where Rokas Filipavičius arrived to finish first time and put the visitors ahead.

Kauno Žalgiris were then forced to chase the match while still playing with ten men. The champions produced several promising individual actions and managed to get into dangerous areas, but their final ball and finishing let them down.

In the end, Banga held firm to claim a valuable away victory and end their own three-match winless run. It was also their first league win away to Kauno Žalgiris since April 2024.

For Kauno Žalgiris, the situation is becoming increasingly serious. The champions have not tasted victory since 1 May and are now without a win in nine matches, with their only victory in that period coming against Riteriai – a result later annulled after Riteriai were removed from the competition.
