Kauno Žalgiris strengthened their position at the top of the Lithuanian Toplyga with a convincing 4-0 victory over FA Šiauliai in a rescheduled Matchday 32 fixture on Saturday.
With one eye on Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League second qualifying round first leg away to Faroese champions KI Klaksvík, the league leaders delivered another composed performance to maintain their momentum.
The visitors created the first real chance of the match inside five minutes when former Kauno Žalgiris forward Dāvis Ikaunieks met Dominykas Kubilinskas’ cross with a header, but goalkeeper Tomas Švedkauskas reacted well to make the save.
Having survived the early scare, the hosts took the lead from a set-piece. Defender Rokas Lekiatas found space inside the penalty area and finished clinically to put Kauno Žalgiris ahead.
The league leaders doubled their advantage shortly before half-time. Nosa Edokpolor delivered an inviting cross into the box, where striker Haris Kadric rose highest to head home and give the hosts a comfortable two-goal cushion at the break.
Šiauliai nearly pulled one back immediately after the restart, but Edgaras Bierantas headed narrowly wide of the post.
Any hopes of a comeback disappeared in the 68th minute when substitute Fabien Ourega finished off a swift counter-attack with a precise strike into the far corner. Just four minutes later, Gratas Sirgėdas capitalised on a costly defensive mistake near the edge of the Šiauliai penalty area to add a fourth and complete the rout.
The victory moves Kauno Žalgiris onto 34 points at the top of the Toplyga standings, while Šiauliai remain rooted to the bottom of the table with 13 points.
Kauno Žalgiris now turn their attention back to Europe, with Željko Sopic’s side travelling to the Faroe Islands ahead of Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League second qualifying round first leg against KI Klaksvik.
