Brighton & Hove Albion sit top of the league after a perfect start to life in the 2026/27 Conference League campaign; however, Kauno Žalgiris showed a positive performance that the club should be proud of.

For the second time since the competition formed, a Lithuanian side was to compete in the UEFA Conference League, and this time around, it was the turn of Kauno Žalgiris, who were competing in their first-ever European tournament. Despite a packed qualification schedule, European football was confirmed all the way back in July, after beating Klaksvik by one goal to nil over two legs with the Faroe Islands outfit.

Kauno Žalgiris came into their opening game of the league phase off the back of silverware in the Lithuanian Cup. Just four days prior, they clinched victory in the final with a 3-0 victory over second-tier FK Minija to win their first LFF Cup in the club’s history. Head coach Željko Sopić, however, explained that celebrations were brief, with some big fixtures ahead.

Standing in the way of Kauno Žalgiris was English Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion, who have enjoyed an overly positive start to life in England’s top flight. The Seagulls are currently unbeaten in their last five in all competitions and are the only side to inflict defeat on the reigning champions, Arsenal, this campaign.

Despite rumours building in the week that boss Fabian Hürzeler has been linked with the Manchester United job, his full focus and attention has been on kicking off the Seagulls’ European campaign on a high note. The German boss has urged supporters to create a loud and energetic atmosphere and to “believe in the quality and believe that we can compete with any team.”

Željko Sopić named nine changes from the starting side that lifted silverware on Sunday in Kaunas. Aldayr Hernandez and Amine Benchaib were the only two players to keep their place in the starting lineup, as all three scorers from Sunday’s cup final victory dropped to the bench.

The hosts from the south coast of England also named eight changes to their starting eleven. Hürzeler handed a full debut in blue and white colours to Austrian centre-back Michael Svoboda. The Seagulls also saw their bench consist of key players such as Maxim De Cuyper, Charalampos Kostoulas and Yasin Ayari, alongside the likes of 19-year-old Shane Nti, a product of the Brighton Academy.

It was the hosts who had the first dangerous opportunity of the clash just two minutes into proceedings. Pascal Gross was able to twist and turn away from Nosa Edokpolor and deliver a ball which went all the way to Olivier Boscagli on the opposite flank. The French full-back redelivered a cross which was greeted by Costinha; however, his close-range header was placed over the crossbar.

To the visitors’ credit, they were doing a superb job at riding the constant wave of Brighton pressure. Boscagli had sent in a plethora of dangerous deliveries that required evasive action from the Kauno Žalgiris back line. Boscagli then had his own effort on goal from the edge of the penalty area, which was once again greeted by some stalwart defending.

Tomas Švedkauskas was called into action for the first time in the encounter at the 14th-minute mark. Star man Pascal Gross teed up a free kick from a narrow angle, which may have caught the shot-stopper by surprise, forcing a fine reaction save at his near post.

The green and white had their first opportunity on goal just after halfway through the first period. Franco Baldassarra picked up the ball on the edge of the box after a half-hearted clearance from the Seagulls. His strike flashed wide of the post, on this occasion causing no issues for Bart Verbruggen between the posts.

Pascal Gross was at the heartbeat of the pressure, picking up the ball in a variety of spaces. When he was able to gain control down the right, he set the ball back to Lewis Dunk, who let fly from 25 yards out, just aiming over the crossbar. The right flank was proving to be a preferable position for the German midfielder. He swung in a pinpoint delivery that was met by the diving Jack Hinshelwood, whose header was aimed into the ground yet looked to be looping on target. Švedkauskas, however, was able to match the Brighton midfielder with the save of the night so far, tipping the effort over the bar.

The hosts were able to find the elusive opener as the first half drew to a close. Ibrahim Osman squared the ball to Georginio Rutter, who was able to thump the ball home emphatically from close range. Both teams had to suffer a long pause as VAR looked at whether the ball made its way out of play before Osman squared it. After a brief wait, the referee pointed to the centre circle, and the goal was officially given. 41’ 1-0

In the first-half stoppage time, the damage to the visitors increased. Georginio Rutter turned provider this time, receiving a quick throw-in which caught the green and white shirts out. He was able to freely drive into the box and pull the ball across to Hinshelwood, who slotted a cool finish past Švedkauskas at his near post to double the Seagulls’ advantage. 45+2’ 2-0

HALF-TIME: Brighton & Hove Albion 2-0 Kauno Žalgiris

Sopić rolled the dice at the break, introducing Rokas Lekiatas and Leon Kreković into the equation. However, it was the hosts who maintained the constant pressure.

Malick Yalcouye was found in space inside the penalty area, and he flashed wide from close range. Not long after, a brilliant move involving both in-form players Pascal Gross and Maxim De Cuyper allowed the latter to hang the ball into the six-yard box; however, Rutter headed over.

The pressure paid off early into the second period. Malick Yalcouye’s slick through ball found the run of Osman, who, in similar fashion to the opener, squared the ball across the box to Georginio Rutter, who was able to convert with a simple close-range finish. 54’ 3-0

67th-minute substitute Younes Ibrahim found himself straight into the action when brought into the encounter. He picked up the ball on the edge and curled an inswinging ball, which Matt O’Riley met with intent, sending a header to the far post which rippled the back of the net, sending Brighton to the top of the 36-team Conference League division. 68’ 4-0

It seemed the Seagulls would not be content with just the four-goal advantage, as they kept the pressure levels high throughout the second half. Yasin Ayari’s effort from range whistled over the bar, followed by Matt O’Riley seeing his close-range header saved by Švedkauskas. It was the visitors’ goalkeeper who was helping to keep the scoreline down, as Matt O’Riley latched on to yet another header from close range, this time being denied by a fantastic stop by the Lithuanian international.

Kauno Žalgiris still found time to have a chance of their own late on. Goalscorer in Sunday’s cup final, Leon Kreković volleyed the ball from the edge of the box, but it resulted in a comfortable catch for Verbruggen. Despite winning a corner in the last kick of the game, the referee brought the game to a close, and Brighton gathered all three points at the American Express Stadium.

In his post match conference, Sopić was keen to express the pride he had in his team, regarding their resilience and character. He stated “I am so proud of the fight we showed out there.”

He also wanted to remind people in the difference in budget and squad value between the two clubs and said that Kauno Žalgiris will have “better chances to win” in their upcoming Conference League, as they balance both their TOPLYGA and UEFA Conference League Schedules.
