Nõmme Kalju climbed back to the top of the Premium Liiga table-at least temporarily – with a composed 3-0 away victory over JK Narva Trans, condemning the hosts to yet another scoreless defeat.
Despite a relatively quiet opening in Narva, it didn’t take long for the pattern of the match to emerge. Kalju controlled possession without creating much early danger, while Trans struggled to show any attacking intent. The first real spark came midway through the half when a deflected effort struck the post, a warning sign of what was to come.
The breakthrough arrived in the 30th minute. A defensive lapse allowed Kalju to recycle possession high up the pitch, and Nikita Ivanov was perfectly positioned in the box to guide a first-time finish into the far corner. It was a simple move, but one that exposed Trans’ lack of sharpness.
Just eight minutes later, the visitors doubled their lead in near-identical fashion. Quick interplay down the right opened space once again, and this time Oleksandr Musolitin applied the finish, calmly slotting home to make it 2-0 before halftime. Kalju’s efficiency stood in stark contrast to a Trans side that looked devoid of urgency.
Any hopes of a comeback were effectively ended early in the second half when Trans were reduced to ten men. Josue Doke received his second yellow card for a late challenge, leaving the home side with an uphill battle that quickly became insurmountable.
From that point, the match drifted. Kalju were content to manage the game, while Trans lacked both the quality and belief to mount any serious pressure. The visitors eventually added a third in the 85th minute when Tiago Baptista reacted quickest inside the box after a scrappy sequence, sealing the result.
There was even time for Kalju to miss a penalty late on, but it mattered little. The damage had already been done.
Narva will have little time to regroup, with another crucial test coming in just four days when they host Flora in the Estonian Cup semi-final, looking to end a 317-minute scoreless run at home. Kalju, meanwhile, will also face Flora next weekend – this time in league action- in what promises to be a key clash in the title race.
