FS Jelgava struck twice in the closing minutes to overturn a one-goal deficit and claim a dramatic 3-2 away victory over Ogre United in the 27th round of the Tonybet Virslīga, dealing a major blow to the hosts’ survival hopes.
The visitors made the brighter start and took the lead after just eight minutes. Adam Dvorak launched a long ball from deep, which Rihards Bečers flicked on with his head. Ogre defender Marusii failed to deal with the bouncing ball, allowing Martin Hašek to race through and calmly fire past Ņikita Parfjonovs for 1-0.
Jelgava’s advantage lasted only a few minutes. Ogre were awarded a penalty after Markuss Kalniņš was brought down inside the area, and captain Kristers Čudars confidently converted from the spot to level the scores at 1-1.
The visitors came close to restoring their lead in the 29th minute when Miloš Pudil escaped his marker at the far post, but Parfjonovs produced an excellent point-blank save to deny the Czech defender. Jelgava thought they had found a second goal before the break, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside.
Instead, it was the home side who went into half-time ahead. In stoppage time, Kalniņš collected the ball inside his own half and produced a brilliant solo run, driving into the penalty area before finishing clinically into the far corner to complete an outstanding individual goal.
Ogre looked the more dangerous side after the restart and created several opportunities to extend their lead, with Kalniņš once again at the heart of most attacks. However, goalkeeper Adam Dvorak kept Jelgava in the contest with a series of important saves.
The hosts then squandered what proved to be a crucial opportunity in the 80th minute. Substitute Jacques Fokam received the ball inside the box and unleashed a powerful effort that crashed against the crossbar instead of putting the game beyond reach.
That miss proved costly.
Jelgava turned the match on its head with two goals in the final minutes. Hašek grabbed his second of the evening after being left completely unmarked inside the penalty area, reacting quickest to a loose ball before placing his finish into the far corner.
Just two minutes later, the comeback was complete. Following a Gļebs Žaleiko delivery from a set piece, Alans Kangars rose highest to power a header into the net and seal a dramatic 3-2 victory for the visitors.
The defeat is a painful one for Ogre United, who missed the chance to reduce the gap to ninth-placed FK Tukums 2000 to three points and instead remain six points adrift. Jelgava, meanwhile, move level on points with SK Super Nova, with both sides sitting on 28 points in sixth and seventh place respectively.
Ogre United return to league action next Sunday when they host reigning champions RFS, while Jelgava travel to face FK Tukums 2000 a day earlier.
