Invego agrees to buy Skonto Stadium, with football to continue for five years
Photo: Riga FC Estonian-Latvian property developer Invego has agreed to acquire Skonto Stadium and plans to redevelop the site as an urban district connecting historic Riga with Skanste. The company says football will continue at the ground for five years while a solution for a new national stadium is sought.
Invego chief executive Kristjan-Thor Vähi said preparing the redevelopment would take at least three to five years. “Until Latvian football has a new, modern home, the current Skonto Stadium will remain available for football for the next five years,” he said. His comments do not guarantee that a new national stadium will be built within that period.
Vähi said he had informed Latvian Football Federation president Vadims Ļašenko, the chair of Riga City Council’s urban development committee and the city’s chief architect about the plans. He said the five-year period should give them sufficient time to find a way forward. In September, Ļašenko had named the Skonto site as his preferred location for a national stadium, saying the existing infrastructure could be used in a reconstruction.
