Estonia’s U-17 national team made its long-awaited debut at the UEFA European Under-17 Championship final tournament on Monday evening, scoring a historic goal but ultimately falling 1-4 to three-time champions Spain national under-17 football team at Lilleküla Stadium in Tallinn.

More than 4,700 spectators gathered at the national stadium to witness a historic night for Estonian youth football, as the hosts faced one of the strongest nations in world football at this age level. Spain immediately showed their class, dominating possession from the opening whistle and constantly testing Estonia goalkeeper Harly Ollin.

The young Estonian shot-stopper produced several confident saves early in the match, denying attempts from Ruben Gomez and Enzo Alves – the son of legendary Brazil and Real Madrid defender Marcelo, who was also present in the stands for the occasion.

Spain’s pressure eventually paid off in the 16th minute when Mikel Urrestrarazu fired home from distance to open the scoring. The visitors doubled their lead in the 30th minute through Sergi Mayans, whose strike from the edge of the box beat Ollin once again.

Five minutes later, Spain made it 3-0 after Estonia lost possession in a dangerous area, allowing Enzo Alves to calmly finish in front of goal.

Despite the difficult first half, Estonia managed to create a special moment for the home crowd before the break. In the 42nd minute, after a dangerous delivery into the penalty area, FC Elva defender Ron Neltsas reacted quickest to the loose ball and headed it into the net, scoring Estonia’s first-ever goal at a UEFA U-17 European Championship final tournament.

The goal gave the hosts a major emotional lift heading into halftime, and Estonia showed more confidence on the ball during periods of the second half. Still, Spain remained fully in control of the match and continued to create chances.

Spain hit the post early after the restart before Estonia defender Uku Nõmm brought down Ebrima Tunkara inside the penalty area in the 54th minute. Tunkara stepped up himself and confidently converted the penalty to restore Spain’s three-goal advantage and seal the 4-1 result.

Although the final score reflected Spain’s superiority, Estonia’s young generation gained valuable experience against one of the tournament favourites and one of the most successful nations in the history of this competition, with Spain having won nine U-17 European titles.

Estonia’s U-17 side will now have two rest days before returning to action on Thursday against Croatia national under-17 football team, who lost 0-2 to Belgium national under-17 football team in the other opening match despite creating more attacking opportunities throughout the game.
