Lithuanian internationals Gvidas Gineitis and Marius Adamonis both saw their clubs progress to the Coppa Italia round of 32 on Sunday, as Torino got past Carrarese while Südtirol eliminated fellow Serie B side Catanzaro on penalties.
The 22-year-old Gineitis, who has been linked with a move away from Torino throughout the summer, started in midfield as the Serie A side hosted Serie B outfit Carrarese in their first competitive match of the new season.
Torino needed just a single goal to secure progression, with Giovanni Simeone finding the net in the ninth minute. Gineitis played the full 90 minutes as Torino booked their place in the next round ahead of next weekend’s Serie A opener at home against AC Milan.
Meanwhile, Südtirol also kept their cup run alive, although Lithuanian goalkeeper Marius Adamonis was on the bench as the Serie B side defeated Catanzaro in a penalty shootout.
After the match ended 2-2 following regulation time, on-loan Venezia goalkeeper Alessandro Plizzari emerged as the hero by saving two penalties, helping Südtirol claim a 4-3 shootout victory and advance to the next round.
The Serie B season also begins next weekend. Südtirol will open their league campaign on Saturday when they host Virtus Entella.
