Lithuania national team goalkeeper Edvinas Gertmonas will continue his career in the Swiss Super League after Servette officially announced the signing of the experienced shot-stopper on a contract running until 2029.
The 29-year-old arrives in Switzerland following two and a half impressive seasons with Romanian side Universitatea Cluj, where he helped the club reach new heights in its modern history. During his time in Romania, Gertmonas played a major role in helping Universitatea Cluj qualify for European competitions for the first time since 1995, while this season the club also came close to securing a historic first league title before eventually finishing runners-up behind Universitatea Craiova.
Universitatea Cluj additionally reached the Romanian Cup final this season, although they ultimately fell short in the decisive match.
Thanks to his performances, Gertmonas was recognised as the best goalkeeper in Romania. Across two and a half seasons with Universitatea Cluj, the Lithuanian international made 74 appearances and kept 30 clean sheets.
With his contract in Romania expiring this summer, Gertmonas chose to take the next step in his career by joining Servette, one of the most historic clubs in Swiss football.
The 126-year-old club are 17-time Swiss champions, although their most recent league title came back in 1999. Servette have also won the Swiss Cup eight times, most recently lifting the trophy during the 2023/24 season.
Despite their rich history, Servette endured a disappointing domestic campaign this year, finishing eighth in the Swiss Super League. The season before, however, the club finished as Swiss runners-up and entered UEFA Champions League qualification, although they suffered defeats in all three qualification rounds and failed to reach any European league phase competition.
In their official announcement, Servette described Gertmonas as a goalkeeper with extensive European football experience.
This move will become the third foreign club of Gertmonas’ professional career. Earlier in his career he spent time in France with Rennes, although most of his appearances came for the club’s reserve side. Following his spell in France, the Lithuanian international returned home and enjoyed four highly successful seasons with Žalgiris Vilnius.
During his time with the Lithuanian giants, Gertmonas won three Lithuanian league titles and lifted the domestic cup twice before eventually moving to Romania.
