Estonia defender Maksim Paskotši will not play again this season after KAA Gent confirmed the centre-back is sidelined with an ankle stress fracture.

The 23-year-old has been managing the issue for several weeks and last featured on 20 February, when he was forced off in the 33rd minute of Gent’s match against Cercle Brugge.

Speaking after that game, Paskotši said he had played the previous matches in significant discomfort before the problem worsened in training. “The last three or four games I played in a lot of pain, but it was more or less OK,” he said. “In the pre-match session it got much worse and on matchday it was just as bad. I tried to play, but the pain got to a point where I could no longer run.”

Paskotši then underwent an MRI scan and initially hoped he would be able to return quickly, but his condition did not improve. Gent later issued a short statement confirming his campaign is over, adding: “We wish you a speedy recovery.”
