Flora open Estonia’s club campaign in Europe this summer knowing an early result could shape more than just their own season, as the champions start in the Champions League qualifiers against Georgian title holders Iberia 1999.

The Tallinn side face opponents who, while two-time reigning champions in Georgia, are viewed as a tie Flora can win. Last year, Levadia showed the route by eliminating Iberia in the Conference League, and Flora now try to follow a similar path while keeping alive the broader aim of protecting Estonia’s European allocation.

Head coach Konstantin Vassiljev said he does not see Flora as favourites. “I think the opponent definitely has strong cards in their hand. Does that make them favourites – hard to say. But I certainly wouldn’t say we are favourites in this match,” he said.

Vassiljev added that the pressure of European football should be treated as an opportunity rather than a burden, with the first qualifying round particularly important because it can secure additional matches. “It’s not pressure – I just want us to realise our potential. If even then the opponent is better, then there’s nothing you can do,” he said.

Flora’s domestic form has fluctuated, but they go into the tie with momentum after a strong spell in the league and cup, including lifting the Estonian Cup. Defeats against direct rivals Levadia and Paide were followed by a late revenge win over Levadia, restoring confidence ahead of the European opener.

They will be without young attacker Andero Kaares, who has left to join Villarreal after catching the attention of scouts at a U17 tournament staged in Estonia. The rest of the squad is available.

Iberia 1999, previously known as Saburtalo before a recent rebrand, are playing in the Champions League qualifiers for only the third time in their history. Their draw was tough last season, when they were paired with Malmö in the first qualifying round. Furthest they have gone in the European qualifiers is reaching the 3rd round of UEFA Europa League qualification and two seasons ago 3rd round of the UEFA Conference League qualifiers.

Match inside the A Le Coq Arena starts 19:00 Baltic time.
