The first Dienvidkurzeme derby of the Tonybet Virslīga season ended in a stalemate, as FK Liepāja were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against FK Grobiņa – despite playing almost the entire second half with ten men.
With a lively crowd in attendance and expectations of a heated, physical encounter, the match delivered intensity, if not a wealth of clear-cut chances. The opening stages reflected that, with early efforts like Ivans Patrikejevs’ fourth-minute attempt drifting wide, while both sides struggled to create meaningful opportunities.
The first real moment of danger came in the 26th minute, when Jānis Krautmanis tried his luck from long distance – nearly 35 meters out – forcing Liepāja goalkeeper Danijel Petkovic into a difficult save to keep the score level.
Liepāja would strike first soon after. From a set piece delivered by Andriy Korobenko, Danila Patijčuks rose at the far post to head home past Vjačeslavs Kudrjavcevs, scoring for the second consecutive match and giving the hosts a crucial lead.
However, the game took a decisive turn early in the second half. Amilcar Silva received his second yellow card following a challenge on Ali Aruna, reducing Liepāja to ten men and leaving Andreas Alm’s side with a long defensive battle ahead.
Grobiņa gradually took control of possession, but breaking down the numerical disadvantage proved difficult. Their first major chance arrived after more than 20 minutes, when Devids Dobrecovs struck from just outside the box, only to see his effort crash against the crossbar.
Moments later, they found the equalizer. Dobrecovs turned provider this time, delivering a dangerous ball into the box that Bart Straalman failed to clear, allowing Artjoms Puzirevskis to react quickest and slot home for 1-1.
With over 15 minutes remaining, Grobiņa pushed for a winner against their depleted opponents, but could not find the decisive touch. Liepāja held firm defensively to secure a point – and in doing so, ensured that for the first time in ten meetings between the sides, the derby ended in a draw.
After the opening round of fixtures, Liepāja sit sixth in the table with 12 points, while Grobiņa follow in seventh, three points behind.
