Estonia’s U17 national team failed to find the net for a third consecutive match as they concluded their home UEFA European Under-17 Championship campaign with a narrow 0-1 defeat against Belgium at Lilleküla Stadium in Tallinn.

Despite the result, Estonia produced another determined display against one of Europe’s traditional youth football powers and left the tournament with plenty of positives after competing bravely against Spain, Croatia and Belgium.

Head coach Marko Pärnpuu made three changes to the starting lineup following the previous match. Kregor Kalvik, Jaron Silm and Aston Visse all entered the side, with Visse rewarded after scoring Estonia’s only goal of the tournament against Croatia.

Estonia made an encouraging start and nearly took an early lead inside the opening minutes. Good work involving Andero Kaares and Aston Visse created a clear opportunity for the striker, but Belgian goalkeeper Lowie Pisele reacted well to deny him in a one-on-one situation.

The hosts continued to play with confidence during the opening stages and looked considerably more adventurous than they had against Spain and Croatia. Jaron Silm impressed in midfield, while Visse’s pace and movement repeatedly caused problems for the Belgian defence, forcing the visitors to commit extra defenders to marking him.

Belgium gradually began to establish control through possession and territory, but Estonia remained organised defensively and competed well physically against their highly rated opponents.

A setback arrived in the 23rd minute when Kaares was forced off through injury after appearing to damage his ankle. Artjom Timakov replaced him as Estonia adjusted their midfield structure.

The breakthrough eventually came in the 41st minute. Kana Nga drove forward from the wing before finding Noah Kalonji in space inside the penalty area. Kalonji’s shot towards the far corner took a slight deflection off defender Uku Nõmm and found its way into the net, giving Belgium a 1-0 lead before halftime.

Belgium’s advantage reflected the growing pressure they had applied during the latter stages of the first half. UEFA statistics showed the visitors holding a 10-2 advantage in total shots by the break, although Estonia had managed to keep two efforts on target of their own.

The second half followed a familiar pattern as Belgium controlled possession while Estonia focused on defensive organisation and searching for opportunities on the counterattack.

Belgium continued to create chances but found Harly Ollin in excellent form. The Estonian goalkeeper produced several important saves, including a crucial late stop in a one-on-one situation to keep his side within touching distance.

Estonia struggled to create attacking opportunities after the interval, with Visse often isolated against multiple defenders whenever the hosts attempted to break forward. Fresh legs arrived from the bench as Samuel Kirsipuu, Kert Tomingas and Karl-Tristan Lorenz were introduced during the second half.

As the match entered its closing stages, Estonia pushed forward in search of a dramatic equaliser. Tomingas provided energy and direct running, winning several important fouls, while the hosts forced Belgium to defend a series of late set pieces.

The final opportunity arrived deep into stoppage time when Estonia delivered a dangerous free-kick into the Belgian penalty area. However, the visitors managed to clear the danger before the referee brought the match to an end.

Belgium’s victory secured their place in the semi-finals alongside Spain, while Croatia were eliminated despite earning a dramatic victory in the group’s other match.

The defeat also marked the end of Estonia’s first appearance at a UEFA Under-17 European Championship final tournament on home soil, with the experience expected to provide valuable lessons for a talented generation of players moving forward.
