Estonia eye Nations League group lead in Tallinn against Iceland

Estonia will bring their intense UEFA Nations League window of four matches in 11 days to a close on Tuesday evening, with Jürgen Henn’s side having the opportunity to move top of their group when they host Iceland at Lilleküla Stadium in Tallinn. Kick-off is scheduled for 21:45 Baltic time.

Estonia have enjoyed an impressive run under Henn, having lifted the Baltic Cup during the summer before beginning their UEFA Nations League C campaign unbeaten in their opening three matches. They started with consecutive away draws against Iceland and Bulgaria before claiming their first victory of the campaign three days ago, beating Luxembourg 1-0 in Tallinn thanks to an early Rasmus Peetson goal.

Tuesday’s opponents Iceland were also Estonia’s first opponents of the Nations League campaign. The sides played out a 1-1 draw in Reykjavik, with Iceland taking the lead towards the end of the first half before Maksim Paskotši equalised for Estonia after the break.

Henn will, however, be without two important players for the return meeting. Captain Karol Mets is suspended after receiving his second yellow card of the campaign against Luxembourg, while first-choice goalkeeper Karl Jakob Hein will miss a second consecutive match through injury and has already returned to his club.

In Hein’s absence, 30-year-old Matvei Igonen impressed against Luxembourg. The Sweden-based goalkeeper dealt with everything that came his way to keep a clean sheet in the 1-0 victory, having made his first appearance for the national team since March 2025.

Estonia enter the fourth round of matches with a genuine opportunity to take control of the group ahead of November’s final international window. Victory in Tallinn would move Henn’s side above Iceland and into first place, although the Estonia head coach insisted before the match that the standings would not change his team’s approach.

“We would rather continue playing the way we have been playing, because that is what has brought us into this position,” Henn said. “At the moment, I see no reason to move away from that.”

Heading into Tuesday’s encounter, Iceland lead the group with seven points, while unbeaten Estonia sit second with five. Luxembourg are third with three points, with Bulgaria bottom of the group on one point.

A victory at Lilleküla Stadium would therefore see Estonia end the October window at the top of the group and put their Nations League fate firmly in their own hands heading into November.
