FC Džiugas Telšiai continued their strong start to the Lithuanian Toplyga season, defeating FK Riteriai 1-0 at home to remain within touching distance of league leaders FK Kauno Žalgiris.
Despite dominating large parts of the match and creating numerous opportunities, Džiugas needed just a single second-half goal from Deitonas Vinckus to secure all three points.
Riteriai actually created the first dangerous moment of the evening when Ukrainian midfielder Artem Baftalovskyi found himself in a promising position early on, but his effort flew wide of the target. After that chance, however, the visitors struggled to threaten again as Džiugas took control of the match.
The hosts thought they had taken the lead in the 13th minute through Valentino Vermeulen, only for the goal to be ruled out due to a foul in the build-up. Ronald Sobowale later came close from a dangerous free-kick, forcing Riteriai goalkeeper Simone Moschin into an important save.
Moschin was once again called into action immediately after halftime. Jakub Wawszczyk unleashed a powerful long-range strike that the Italian goalkeeper tipped onto the crossbar, before Sobowale reacted quickest to head home the rebound. The celebrations were short-lived, though, as the striker was ruled offside.
Džiugas finally got the breakthrough in the 55th minute. Vilius Piliukaitis delivered a cross into the penalty area where Deitonas Vinckus beat his marker and powered a header into the net to send the home supporters into celebration.
Riteriai pushed for a late equaliser in the closing stages but rarely troubled goalkeeper Marius Paukštė, with the visitors managing only one harmless effort on target.
The victory marked Džiugas’ second clean-sheet win over Riteriai this season and moved the Telšiai side back within three points of league leaders Kauno Žalgiris, who had the opportunity to restore a six-point advantage in their upcoming fixture against Panevėžys.
Džiugas will next host Banga Gargždai, while Riteriai – still searching for their first league win after 13 matches – will try to finally break that streak against Panevėžys in the next round.
