The opening match of Toplyga Round 21 between two of the league’s title contenders failed to produce a winner, as Džiugas Telšiai and defending champions FK Kauno Žalgiris played out a goalless draw in difficult weather conditions.
Played in heavy rain in Telšiai, the first half offered very few clear-cut opportunities for either side. Kauno Žalgiris looked the more dangerous team, testing the hosts with several efforts from distance, although none seriously troubled the goalkeeper.
The visitors’ brightest attacking outlet was Motiejus Burba, who caused problems down the flank throughout the opening period. His best contribution came when he delivered a dangerous low cross across the face of goal, but Renan Oliveira was unable to stretch far enough to convert at the far post.
Džiugas, meanwhile, struggled to create anything of note before the break. Despite winning two corners, the league leaders failed to register a single shot on target during the opening 45 minutes.
The hosts knew they needed a greater attacking threat after the restart, especially considering that their previous league match – a 0-0 draw against fellow title contenders Žalgiris Vilnius – had seen them attempt only three shots in total, none of which hit the target.
Instead, it was Kauno Žalgiris who emerged as the stronger side after half-time. The defending champions began spending considerably more time in the final third and created the best chances of the match. First, Edokpolor delivered an inviting cross from the left that found Renan Oliveira between two defenders, but the Brazilian striker’s header crashed against the post.
The pressure continued to build. Soon afterwards, Amine Benchaib found himself in an excellent position inside the penalty area, controlled the ball and unleashed a powerful effort, only for Senegalese defender Bacary Sane to produce a superb last-ditch block, throwing himself in front of the shot to deny what looked a certain goal.
Džiugas finally forced goalkeeper Tomas Švedkauskas into action midway through the second half when Deitonas Vinckus received the ball inside the box and managed the hosts’ first effort on target. However, the shot lacked power and went straight at the Kauno Žalgiris goalkeeper, who gathered comfortably.
Despite both sides searching for a breakthrough, neither team managed to find a winner on the rain-soaked surface, with the points ultimately shared after a hard-fought goalless draw.
The match also saw the debut of Serbian defender Marko Konatar, who recently joined Kauno Žalgiris from Serbian SuperLiga side Železničar Pančevo and was introduced midway through the second half.
The result leaves the title race as close as ever. Džiugas return to the top of the Toplyga standings with 30 points from 19 matches, while Kauno Žalgiris remain third on 28 points, having played one game fewer.
Džiugas now have a short break before returning to league action on 19 July, when they host Banga Gargždai. Kauno Žalgiris, meanwhile, immediately switch their attention to Europe, with the Lithuanian champions set to make their UEFA Champions League qualifying debut on Tuesday when they host Kosovo champions Drita in the first leg of their opening-round tie.
