FS Jelgava finally returned to winning ways in the ninth round of the Tonybet Virslīga, grinding out a hard-fought 1-0 victory on the road against Ogre United.
Both teams came into the match desperate for points. Jelgava had not tasted victory since the opening round of the season, while Ogre United were still searching for their first-ever win in the top flight. With strong winds disrupting the flow of play, the first half offered little in terms of quality chances, as both sides largely resorted to speculative long-range efforts without success.
The game came to life after the break, with Jelgava taking control. Their best early chance arrived in the 53rd minute when Roberts Meļķis twisted past with three defenders around and unleashed a shot that rattled the post. The visitors continued to apply pressure, but Ogre United soon responded with a dangerous counterattack – Markuss Ivulāns beat his man brilliantly before firing from a tight angle, only to be denied by a sharp save from goalkeeper Adam Dvorak.
Moments later, Felipe Machado had a golden opportunity for the hosts but failed to hit the target from a promising position, and that miss would prove costly.
The decisive moment came shortly after. Following a cross from Meļķis, Mārtiņš Lormanis attempted to clear the danger, but his effort fell straight to Filip Hašek, who made no mistake with a powerful finish past Ņikita Parfjonovs to give Jelgava the lead.
Ogre United pushed forward in search of an equalizer, and they came agonizingly close in the dying moments. In the 90th minute, substitute Matvii Marusiy unleashed a thunderous strike from around 30 metres that seemed destined for the top corner, but Dvorak produced a spectacular save, flying across goal to tip the ball away and preserve Jelgava’s advantage.
The final whistle confirmed a crucial victory for Jelgava, ending a seven-match winless streak and providing a much-needed boost for Aleksandrs Basovs’ side. For Ogre United, the wait for a historic first Virslīga win goes on, as they suffered their sixth defeat of the season.
Jelgava will look to build on this result in their next outing away to Tukums 2000, while Ogre United face another tough challenge as they prepare to take on FC RFS.
