Lithuanian champions FK Kauno Žalgiris suffered a heavy 0-5 defeat away to Croatian giants Dinamo Zagreb in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League third qualifying round tie on Tuesday evening, leaving themselves with a mountain to climb ahead of next week’s return leg in Kaunas.
Playing in front of more than 20,000 spectators at Maksimir Stadium, Željko Sopic returned to his hometown to face the club where he both played and coached, but his side found themselves under pressure from the opening whistle.
Dinamo dominated possession throughout the early stages and created the first opportunities of the match, forcing goalkeeper Tomas Švedkauskas into an important save after just 12 minutes. Kauno Žalgiris struggled to establish any meaningful possession, with their first sustained attacking move only arriving after 17 minutes, although it ended without a shot on goal.
After a cooling break midway through the first half due to the intense heat in Zagreb, the Croatian champions finally broke the deadlock in the 32nd minute. Miha Zajc unleashed a powerful strike from distance which Švedkauskas managed to get a hand to, but the ball struck the post before bouncing into the net to make it 1-0.
Just two minutes later Dinamo doubled their advantage. Following a corner kick, Scottish defender Scott McKenna latched onto a cross in the penalty area to score, leaving the Lithuanian champions trailing by two at the interval.
The hosts continued where they had left off after the break and effectively killed the contest six minutes into the second half. Mateo Lisica finished off another well-worked attack to extend Dinamo’s lead to 3-0.
Kauno Žalgiris came closest to getting back into the game in the 66th minute when Franko Baldassarra struck the crossbar, but instead of reducing the deficit, the visitors found themselves even further behind.
With 13 minutes remaining, Luka Stojkovic punished a mistake in the visitors’ build-up play, seeing his effort bounce in off the post to make it 4-0.
The scoring was completed deep into stoppage time when Dinamo broke quickly on the counter-attack and Lukas Kacavenda calmly finished to seal a comprehensive 5-0 victory for the Croatian side.
Kauno Žalgiris will now look to restore some pride and end their impressive European campaign on a positive note when they host Dinamo Zagreb in the second leg next Tuesday at the Darius and Girėnas Stadium. Regardless of the outcome, the Lithuanian champions have already secured a historic place in the UEFA Conference League league phase, becoming only the second Lithuanian club to achieve the feat after Žalgiris Vilnius.
