FK Tukums 2000 and BFC Daugavpils played out a 1-1 draw in the opening match of Tonybet Virslīga Matchday 8, with both sides forced to settle for a point.
Tukums, still searching for their first win of the season after seven matches (0–4–3), came into the game hoping to finally break their streak, while Daugavpils were aiming to continue their impressive run and secure a fifth consecutive victory – which would have marked a club record in the Virslīga, having previously won four in a row at the start of the 2024 season.
After a relatively quiet opening few minutes, the first big chance came in the 9th minute for the hosts. A defensive mistake from a Daugavpils player allowed Ruslans Deružinskis to find himself in a dangerous position, but his close-range effort was brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Jānis Beks, who reacted quickly and stretched out a leg to deny the goal.
Daugavpils responded midway through the half with a chance of their own. Mamadou Sylla found Abdel Kader Traore, who struck from a tight angle towards the near post. He beat the goalkeeper, but the ball came back off the post. The entertaining first half continued end-to-end, with another chance for Tukums as Kaspars Anmanis, following a strong run and cross from Deružinskis, fired straight at the goalkeeper from close range. At the other end, Artem Garzha unleashed a powerful long-range effort that rattled the crossbar.
The game always felt like it needed goals, and they finally arrived early in the second half. After regaining possession following a long clearance from the Daugavpils goalkeeper, Tukums quickly launched an attack. Substitute Shibata found Joseph Ede Oloko, and the Nigerian forward scored his fourth goal of the season to put the hosts ahead.
Daugavpils responded in the 60th minute. In-form Joel Yakubu received the ball on the left, drove into the penalty area, and finished clinically into the far corner to score for the third consecutive match and level the game at 1-1.
In the closing stages, Tukums showed greater intent to push for a winner, but Daugavpils limited them mostly to long-range efforts from Shibata and Ede Oloko, both of which were comfortably handled by Beks.
At the final whistle, the points were shared. Tukums recorded their fifth draw in eight matches this season, while Daugavpils saw their four-game winning streak come to an end, missing out on a potential club record.
Tukums will next travel to face FK Auda on Sunday, while BFC Daugavpils will complete the first round a day later at home against SK Super Nova.
