Daugavpils deepen Ogre United’s relegation danger with 2-1 win

Ogre United’s hopes of avoiding relegation suffered a major setback as they lost 2-1 at home to Daugavpils in the Virsliga on Sunday, 11th October. Ogre remain six points behind Tukums 2000 with four matches left, but will need at least seven points to stay in the division. Two of their remaining fixtures are against top-three sides.

Abdoul Kader Traore opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, his cross from a tight angle eluding everyone and finding the net. Jacques Fokam levelled eight minutes later, following up after Daugavpils goalkeeper Jānis Beks failed to deal cleanly with a high ball. It was Fokam’s first goal for Ogre.

Traore restored Daugavpils’ lead in the 58th minute, finishing from close range after Ervīns Piņaskins’ pass found him in the penalty area. Ogre pressed for an equaliser late on, but Markus Kalniņš shot wide after Beks came off his line, and the goalkeeper later saved Timofiy Marusiy’s header.

The win lifted Daugavpils to 42 points, one behind fourth-placed Liepāja, who have a game in hand. Ogre remain bottom on 18 points.
