After suffering a 3-0 defeat in the first leg in Tbilisi, few believed FK Žalgiris Vilnius had any realistic chance of continuing their UEFA Conference League campaign. The Lithuanian champions, however, had other ideas. Producing one of the most remarkable performances in the club’s history, they stormed to a stunning 7-2 victory to complete an unforgettable comeback and write another historic chapter in the club’s history.
FK Žalgiris started the match on the front foot and looked dangerous from the opening whistle. It took just eight minutes for the visitors to earn a penalty after midfielder Paulius Golubickas was pulled back inside the box. However, the perfect opportunity to take an early lead went begging, as Nikola Petković fired his spot-kick over the crossbar. Head coach Andrius Skerla’s reaction, dropping to his knees in disbelief, perfectly captured the frustration of the missed chance.
Despite the early setback, Žalgiris eventually found the breakthrough in the 26th minute. Golubickas delivered an excellent pass into the penalty area, leaving Stanislav Bilenkyi with the simple task of guiding the ball into the bottom-right corner to give the Lithuanian side a deserved lead.
Unfortunately for Žalgiris, the advantage lasted only until the 40th minute. Following a failed attempt to clear the danger inside their own penalty area, the visitors inadvertently gifted possession to Luis Santos, and the Brazilian forward made no mistake, calmly finding the back of the net to level the score before half-time.
After the break, FK Žalgiris reignited the contest with two quick-fire goals that sparked hopes of an extraordinary comeback. Petkovic reduced the deficit to 2-1 in the 59th minute before Bryan Teixeira struck just two minutes later, bringing the Vilnius side within touching distance at 3-1.
The momentum, however, was briefly halted in the 72nd minute when Dinamo restored their cushion. Mate Vatsadze silenced the home crowd with a superb left-footed strike from outside the penalty area, making it 3-2 on aggregate.
Yet the drama was far from over. Just two minutes later, Deividas Šešplaukis’ header was only partially dealt with by the Dinamo defence, allowing Petkovic to react quickest and fire home Žalgiris’ fourth goal of the night.
The hosts continued to pour forward and were rewarded again in the 82nd minute. Petkovic’s initial effort was denied by the goalkeeper, but after the rebound fell kindly, Bilenkyi showed excellent composure to control the ball before calmly finishing to put Žalgiris 5-2 ahead.
There was still more to come. In the 88th minute, Nemanja Mihajlovic produced a moment of pure brilliance, cutting in from the left flank before unleashing a stunning long-range strike into the net to make it 6-2.
And the remarkable evening was capped off in style. Deep into the closing stages, Bilenkyi added his second goal of the match with another powerful effort from distance, sealing an unforgettable 7-2 victory for FK Žalgiris.
In the third qualifying round of the UEFA Conference League, FK Žalgiris will face the loser of the tie between Hajduk Split and Pafos.
