Banga Gargždai continued their impressive recent form with a commanding 3-0 victory over Vilnius Žalgiris in Toplyga round 18, producing a ruthless attacking display and handing Andrius Skerla’s side a heavy defeat.
The hosts arrived full of confidence after impressive away win earlier this week over Kauno Žalgiris and extended their unbeaten run to four matches. Vilnius Žalgiris, meanwhile, travelled to Gargždai on the back of three consecutive victories under Skerla and sat fifth in the table before kick-off.
The visitors handed a first start to summer signing Dominik Franke, who joined from Swiss champions Thun and made his debut in the previous round’s 3-0 win over Panevėžys. However, it was Banga who made the brighter start.
The home side immediately put pressure on the Žalgiris defence. Japanese midfielder Misaki Sato came close to opening the scoring with a dangerous effort from a tight angle that flashed narrowly wide of the far post.
The breakthrough arrived in the ninth minute. After a poor pass from Petr Bosančić was intercepted, the ball eventually found Aaron Olugbogi. The Nigerian midfielder turned sharply just outside the penalty area and unleashed a precise strike into the top corner, leaving goalkeeper Vincentas Šarkauskas with no chance. It was Olugbogi’s third goal of the season to go alongside his six assists in 17 league appearances.
Banga continued to threaten after taking the lead, but Žalgiris gradually settled into the contest and began creating chances of their own. Their best opportunity of the first half fell to Bosančić, who drove forward through the middle before forcing Volodymyr Krynskyi into a difficult save with a powerful long-range effort. Both sides attacked with intent throughout the opening period, but Banga carried a deserved one-goal advantage into the break.
The visitors were dealt a major blow shortly after halftime as Banga doubled their lead in the 54th minute. Sato delivered an inviting cross from the right and Rokas Filipavičius applied the finishing touch from close range to make it 2-0.
Skerla responded immediately with a double substitution, introducing Croatian midfielder Marko Capan and Martynas Setkus in an attempt to spark a comeback. Capan, who scored in the previous round, looked lively and carved out several promising opportunities, but Krynskyi remained solid between the posts.
Žalgiris came closest to reducing the deficit when Yury Kendysh rattled the crossbar following a set-piece, but that was as close as they would come. At the other end, Banga nearly put the game beyond doubt through a devastating counterattack. Vaidas Magdušauskas saw his effort saved by Šarkauskas, while Olugbogi somehow failed to convert the rebound from point-blank range as the Žalgiris goalkeeper produced another excellent stop to keep his side alive.
Any remaining hopes of a comeback disappeared in the 81st minute. Another swift Banga counterattack sliced through the visitors’ defence before substitute Maksim Andrejev received the ball inside the penalty area and calmly fired past Šarkauskas to score his first goal of the season and seal a memorable victory.
Despite enjoying long spells of possession, Žalgiris rarely managed to create a truly clear-cut opportunity and ultimately suffered a deserved defeat that ended their three-match winning streak.
The victory lifts Banga from sixth to fourth place in the standings on 30 points, while Žalgiris drop to sixth, two points behind their opponents.
Banga will look to continue their strong run next Sunday when they host Hegelmann. Žalgiris, meanwhile, face another difficult test away to league leaders Džiugas Telšiai as they attempt to bounce back immediately.
