Banga Gargždai climbed into the Toplyga top three after defeating FC Hegelmann 2-0 at home, extending their impressive defensive streak to four consecutive clean sheets. The victory also marked Banga’s third win over Hegelmann this season, while goalkeeper Volodymyr Krynskyi and his defence have now gone more than 410 minutes without conceding a goal.
Both teams approached the match positively from the opening whistle, creating chances in an entertaining first half. Hegelmann looked the more dangerous side during the opening stages, frequently delivering crosses into the penalty area. Their best opportunity came after another dangerous delivery from Artem Shchedryi found Swedish striker Darrell Tibell completely unmarked, but his header drifted wide of the target.
Banga responded with attacks of their own, mainly through long-range efforts. Swedish player Kofi Asare forced Rokas Bagdonavičius into action with a powerful strike from distance as the hosts gradually grew into the contest.
The visitors then came closest to breaking the deadlock. Following a long ball into the penalty area, Andrius Kaulinis controlled well under pressure before firing towards goal, but Volodymyr Krynskyi produced an excellent reaction save with his outstretched leg to keep the scores level.
Although both sides continued to create dangerous situations before the interval, neither goalkeeper was beaten as the teams went into half-time locked at 0-0.
The open nature of the game continued after the restart, with both sides searching for the breakthrough. It eventually arrived in the 77th minute following one of Banga’s trademark counter-attacks. Substitute Vaidas Magdušauskas burst down the left before delivering a perfect low cross across the face of goal, where Japanese forward Misaki Sato arrived unmarked to tap home his third league goal of the season.
Hegelmann were forced to commit more players forward in search of an equaliser and enjoyed several promising attacks, but doing so also left space at the back. They were fortunate not to concede a second goal shortly afterwards when Aaron Olugbogi intercepted a pass in midfield and immediately released Maksim Andrejev through on goal. However, Bagdonavičius came to Hegelmann’s rescue with an excellent one-on-one save to deny the forward for the second consecutive match.
The visitors continued pushing numbers forward in the closing stages, but that left them vulnerable once again deep into stoppage time. Substitute Magdušauskas was once again the architect, driving into the penalty area from the left before producing another superb cut-back. This time experienced midfielder Dovydas Norvilas arrived completely unmarked to calmly slot home his first goal of the season, sealing all three points for the home side.
The victory moves Banga up to third place in the Toplyga standings with 27 points, while Hegelmann remain seventh on 18 points.
Banga will look to continue their winning run after a little break when they travel to face TransINVEST in two weeks’ time, while Hegelmann return to action next Saturday with an away trip to Panevežys.
