Auda forward Josue Vergara has been voted Virslīga player of the month for April after a strong start to his first season in Latvia’s top flight.

The 18-year-old Panama striker featured in all six of Auda’s league matches during the month, starting five of them, and scored four goals. He struck the only goal in a 1-0 win away at RFS and netted again in a 2-1 victory over Liepāja.

Vergara’s standout contribution came against Jelgava, where he scored twice as Auda recovered from 2-0 down to win. He followed that with another brace in a 2-1 win over Super Nova on 1 May.

Vergara today scored twice in a 7-0 win against Grobiņa and now he is up to 10 goals this season.

The shortlist for April’s award was drawn up by the Latvian Football Federation coaches’ council and the Latvian top-flight association, with media representatives and supporters voting via Facebook and Instagram. Vergara beat off competition from Muhammed Badamosi (Riga), Joseph Ede Oloko (Tukums 2000), Rostand Ndjiki (Daugavpils), Facundo Garcia (Super Nova) and Roberts Savaļnieks (RFS).

RFS head coach Viktors Morozs was named coach of the month for the second time this year after his side picked up four wins, one draw and one defeat from six league matches in April.
