In the TOPsport A Lyga, FC Hegelmann secured a victory against the defending champions FK Žalgiris, taking the lead in the league table. In another match, FK Banga Gargždai defeated the struggling DFK Dainava Alytus 2-1.
Hegelmann has had a strong record against Žalgiris recently, remaining unbeaten in their last five encounters, with four of them being wins. The match began strongly for Hegelmann, as Carlos Duke slipped behind the Žalgiris defense and scored from close range, thanks to an excellent setup by his teammate.
Later in the first half, Žalgiris equalized during a counter-attack when Gustas Jarusevičius found the back of the net. However, Hegelmann quickly responded. In the 37th minute, after a set-piece delivered into the box by Leo Ribeiro, Vilius Armalas redirected the ball into the goal with his knee, making it 2-1.
In the second half, Hegelmann had several opportunities to extend their lead, but failed to capitalize. On the other end, Žalgiris found their chance when Hegelmann’s Nikola Djoric committed a clumsy foul in the penalty box. The referee awarded a penalty, and experienced player Ovidijus Verbickas stepped up to take it, but he missed, sending the ball wide!
In the 89th minute, Hegelmann’s Jonathan Mulder received a second yellow card and was sent off, leaving the home team in a challenging position as they tried to hold onto their lead. Despite this setback, Hegelmann’s defense remained resolute, allowing them to secure their fifth win in the last six matches against FK Žalgiris. With this victory, Hegelmann now leads the league table with 18 points after eight matches, while Žalgiris ranks sixth with 12 points.
