After the conclusion of the second round of the TOPsport A Lyga, Marijampolė Sūduva is the only team remaining with a perfect record. They achieved a dramatic 1-0 victory against FK Banga Gargždai at home, thanks to a late goal from substitute Lukšys.

Both teams started the season with a victory. FK Banga Gargždai defeated FC Hegelmann 2-0, while FK Sūduva triumphed in a high-scoring match against A Lyga newcomers FK Riteriai, winning 4-3.

Last season, the two teams faced each other four times in the league. Sūduva won twice, one match ended in a draw, and Banga secured one victory. The matches were not high-scoring, with the highest goal total being two goals in one game. Two matches ended with just one goal, while the remaining game ended in a scoreless draw. Therefore, a low-scoring game was anticipated today, and that expectation was met.

Banga did not register a dangerous shot on goal in the first half. In contrast, Marijampolė’s Kota Sakurai narrowly missed connecting with the ball in front of the goal.

The second half saw more action. Idris Momoh came close with a header that grazed the crossbar, and Žygimantas Baltrūnas shook the goalpost with a powerful long-range shot.

The hosts, who were more active throughout the match, finally scored in the 89th minute. Henry Uzochukwu, effective on the right wing throughout the game, assisted Nojus Lukšys, who was in the box. Lukšys, having recently come on as a substitute, headed the ball into the goal with precision and celebrated by taking off his shirt.

Banga nearly equalized in the final moments, but Ramanauskas’s shot missed the target.

As a result, Marijampolė moved to first place with 6 points, while Banga sits in the middle of the tournament table with 3 points.
