On Sunday in the Swiss Super League Andrejs Cigaņiks helped his Luzern secure a 2-1 victory over Sion FC during Matchday 25.
The Latvian national team player was once again in the starting lineup for Luzern, which is striving for its first Swiss Super League title since the 1988/89 season. This match marked their third encounter of the season with Sion FC, with each team having won one of the previous matchups.
Luzern started strong, taking the lead in the 6th minute when Austrian forward Adrian Grbic scored the opening goal. In the 58th minute, the team doubled their advantage due to an own goal from Sion’s defender Kreshnik Hajrizi. However, Sion responded in the 65th minute with an own goal of their own, as Luzern’s defender Ottiger inadvertently put the ball into his own net. Despite the late pressure from Sion, Luzern held on to secure a crucial three points.
Cigaņiks, who played the full 90 minutes, made his 23rd appearance of the season, tallying one goal and three assists thus far.
This win propelled Luzern into a tie for the top of the league table, with 42 points, alongside Basel, Lugano, and Servette. The standings are incredibly tight—the only reason Basel remains atop the table is due to a superior goal difference. Notably, Servette managed to catch up to the leaders today, largely thanks to Valmiera FC loanee Alioune Ndoye, who scored his first two goals for the club in a 3-1 victory over Winterthur.
Luzern’s next challenge will come next Sunday when they face Yverdon in an away match.
