FK Auda has announced the signing of Rihards Matrevics, the Latvian national team goalkeeper who played for Riga FC the past two seasons. Matrevics has signed a one-year contract with the club.
FK Auda has revamped its goalkeeping lineup since last season. Starting goalkeeper Krišjānis Zviedris has signed with Riga FC, and Raivo Stūriņš has been loaned to FK Tukums 2000/Telms.
Currently, Matrevics will compete for the number one spot with the experienced Roberts Ozols, who has returned to Latvia after playing in Uzbekistan, and 18-year-old Kristers Daniels Bite, who was the starting goalkeeper for SK Super Nova, which achieved promotion to the Virslīga.
Matrevics, who for the two previous seasons played for Riga FC, left the team last week by mutual agreement. During the previous season, he made only eight league appearances, and after an unknown disagreement with the team, he was sent to the reserve team after October’s international break.
Before joining Riga, Matrevics spent six years in England, training at the West Ham academy and playing for Barnet and Hendon in the lower leagues. In 2021, he returned to Latvia and signed with Valmiera FC, leading them to their first Virslīga title in 2022.
While he was not the undisputed number-one goalkeeper for his club, Matrevics was a regular starter for the national team, playing in nine out of ten games in 2024, including all six matches in the Nations League tournament.
FK Auda, which appointed Jurģis Kalns as the new manager yesterday, is currently in training camp abroad. They will kick off the new Virslīga season on March 5, when they will face FC RFS in the opening league match.
