The Latvian U19 national team goalkeeper Henrijs Auseklis for the first time in his career has been named in the Italian Serie A side’s Cagliari squad list for tomorrow’s league game against Parma Calcio.
Cagliari announced the squad for the Serie A match against Parma on their social media today, and there was a surprising addition: Henrijs Auseklis, listed as number 22, has been included for the first time.
The 18-year-old goalkeeper, who stands 1.96 meters tall, joined the Cagliari system in April 2024 after moving from JDFS Alberts. This season, Auseklis has made three appearances for the Cagliari Primavera 1 team and two appearances for the U18 squad.
Currently, in the Primavera 1 team, he is behind Bulgarian youth international Velizar-Iliya Iliev, who is one and a half years older than Auseklis. Iliev has been selected as the third goalkeeper for Cagliari’s previous Serie A matches.
However, the coaching staff has opted to include the young Latvian goalkeeper as the third goalkeeper for tomorrow’s match. This decision may be influenced by the fact that the Cagliari Primavera team has a game scheduled just four hours before the Serie A match, allowing Iliev to start in that match while Auseklis gains valuable experience with the senior team.
Currently, the starting goalkeeper for Cagliari is 23-year-old Elia Caprile, who is on loan from Napoli. The backup duties are handled by 27-year-old Albanian international Alen Sherri, who joined Cagliari directly from the Albanian league and made six appearances at the start of the season.
Cagliari will host Parma tomorrow at 16:00 Baltic time. They are currently 16th in the league table, with 21 points.
