The German Frauen-Bundesliga club SV Werder Bremen has announced the signing of a Latvian national team goalkeeper Sofja Ņesterova.

The 23-year-old lastly was the starting goalkeeper for the RFS Women, previously known as SFK Rīga, where she made 14 appearances in the Latvian top women’s league last season. She helped the team win the Latvian Cup and finish second in the league during her last season there.

Ņesterova joins Werder Bremen as the second-choice goalkeeper following the termination of the contract with Belgian goalkeeper Diede Lemey. Birte Brüggemann, the head of the women’s and girls’ football department at SV Werder Bremen, stated, “Diede felt very uncomfortable in her role as number two, which meant our expectations no longer matched. Termination of the contract was the only option for us. We wish her all the best for her sporting and personal future.”

Brüggemann also expressed optimism about Ņesterova’s potential contributions to the team: “With Sofja, we have signed a goalkeeper who will complete our goalkeeper trio in the second half of the season and can further develop individually.”

The starting goalkeeper for the Werder Bremen club is Livia Peng, a Swiss national team player who joined in the summer of 2023.

Currently, SV Werder Bremen occupies 8th place in the Frauen-Bundesliga table, with 17 points after 12 matches.

Ņesterova is not the first Latvian to sign with the Grauen-Bundesliga club as in August 2020, Sandra Voitāne became the first Latvian player to sign with a Frauen-Bundesliga team when she joined SV Meppen.
