Matas Vareika, a 24-year-old who debuted for the Lithuanian men’s national football team last year, might begin his career abroad in Azerbaijan.
According to Sport24.az, the Ganja-based Kapaz club is in the “final stages of negotiations” with the player, who completed last season with Hegelmann. It is noted that the Kapaz club, preparing for the second half of the season, aims to strengthen its squad, and M. Vareika is expected to provide his decision in the coming days.
The attacking midfielder scored 10 goals and provided 1 assist in 32 matches during the last A lyga season. Together with Hegelmann, he earned the second place. Prior to that, the Lithuanian international played for Žalgiris Vilnius, leaving the club amidst significant conflicts. He successfully challenged the financial penalties imposed on him by the club and won the case.
In the Azerbaijan Premier League, Kapaz currently sits 9th out of 10 teams, with 11 points from 18 matches. The club finished in the same position last season.
