Dāvis Ikaunieks today made his debut in the Singapore Premier League, as his team DPMM FC suffered a 2-4 defeat against the Lion City Sailors.
At the start of January, after a productive last season in Lithuania for FA Šiauliai, the Latvian National team forward joined the Brunei capital city club, which plays their football in the Singapore Premier League.
Today, the league restarted after a two-month winter break, and Dāvis Ikaunieks, who a few days ago celebrated his 31st birthday, was selected in the starting lineup as one of the six foreign players on his team. Although he played the entire match, DPMM FC lost to the current league leaders and three-time Singapore Premier League champions, Lion City Sailors.
German player Lennart Thy scored two goals for the winning side; he scored 13 goals for PEC Zwolle in the Dutch Eredivisie last season.
DPMM FC currently sit in the sixth place of a nine-team league with 21 points. Dāvis Ikaunieks’ next chance to score his first goal in Asia is on Saturday, when he will face Geylang at home.
